GMU Breaks Ground on Two New Buildings at their Prince William Campus in Innovation Tech Park

Prince William County, Virginia – September 14th 2011 – University and community dignitaries were on hand today for a ceremony celebrating the groundbreaking of two new buildings on George Mason University’s Prince William Campus.

To accommodate the astronomical growth of the University’s Prince William Campus, George Mason University is erecting a new 105,858 square foot residential building and a 75,354 square foot laboratory building. Both buildings were designed by Cannon Design and will be built by Gilbane Development Company. Construction of both projects will begin simultaneously.

The new life sciences building will expand the current research facilities and offer more opportunities for collaboration and program growth. The building will serve as the new home to Mason’s Center for Applied Proteomics and Molecular Medicine, a nationally recognized center that studies the behavior of microscopic proteins. The second life sciences building of its type on the campus, this building is planned to include wet lab space available for commercial lease as well as laboratories to house university research programs. The projected cost of the facility is $30 million and it is expected to be completed by spring 2013.

The new residential building will provide graduate student housing on campus. The building will include 152 apartment style beds in 112 units, student lounge areas, study areas and instructional space. The building will also include 15,000 square feet of retail space that will "expand amenities to the campus and surrounding community" and mark the "first step in creating [the] adjacent town center," according to the University. The facility carries a projected cost of $14 million and is slated for completion in late summer, 2012.
