George Mason University Celebrates the Grand Opening of the New Biosafety Research Laboratory in Innovation Technology Park

GMU's Biosafety Research Laboratory in Innovation Technology Park

One of only 13 Biosafety Level 3 laboratories nationwide, the BRL is part of George Mason University’s Center for Biodefense and Infectious diseases and is located in the heart of Prince William County’s Innovation Technology Park. The facility is home to research in the fields of infectious diseases, proteomics, and genomics with specific focus on the development of techniques and products for the detection, diagnosis, prevention and treatment of diseases that result from biological terrorism and natural occurrences.

 
PWC Named One of Fastest Growing Job Markets
Virginia Named #1 for Business
Job Growth

CNN Money announced the top 25 localities in its "Where the Jobs Are" list. Prince William County climbed from number 23 last year to number 17 on the current list with a job growth rate of 32% from 2000–2009. "This announcement affirms our position as one of the leading job markets in the country," said Corey Stewart, Chairman Prince William Board of County Supervisors.

Virginia is #1 in Pollina Corporate Real Estate Inc.’s top 10 list of "states that serve as a model for the rest of the country in job retention and creation." Virginia also occupied the top spot in the rankings in 2003, 2007 and 2009. Speaking about the ranking, Governor McDonnell said, "we've known here in Virginia for a long time - that we are the best state in America for business."
 
ATCC Awarded Major NIAID Contract to Support Infectious Diseases and Biodefense Work

ATCC has been awarded a major contract from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases to support the agency’s infectious diseases and biodefense research. "Through this program ATCC will provide NIAID with the infrastructure for the development and evaluation of vaccines, therapeutics, and diagnostics," said Mary Nicholson, Senior Director BioServices at ATCC.

Cutting edge research and major biodefense breakthroughs continue to emerge from George Mason University’s Life Sciences Campus in Prince William County, Virginia.

"The ultimate goal of this research is to create a vaccine and better therapeutics that will make the population less vulnerable to this bioterror threat" said Monique van Hoek, assistant professor of molecular and microbiology at Mason’s National Center for Biodefense and Infectious Diseases.

 

 
 
PWC Economic Development Launches New Interactive Sites and Buildings Database
ATCC The Prince William County Department of Economic Development recently launched a new interactive, data rich, site and buidling selection tool to assist our clients in the site selection process. The application features information on available space and acreage within the County as well as detailed demographic, consumer spending and labor force information relative to each property. Locations & Expansions
Designer and manufacturer of power generation equipment, power systems, gasoline engines and custom power supplies, Cummins announced their intent to locate a facility in Prince William County creating 50 new jobs and investing $4.2m.
EarthWalk, a leader in high-efficiency computing, announced their intent to expand in PWC investing $5m and creating 40 new jobs.
Zeiders, a professional training services provider with several Defense and Military agencies in their client portfolio, announced their intent to expand within PWC thereby creating 15 new jobs and investing $1.12m.
Superior Air Handling announced their intent to invest $800k and create 10 new jobs with their decision to locate in Prince William.
High voltage components manufacturer HV Technologies is expanding in PWC with intended investment of $180K.
SAIC subsidiary SET Corp announced thier intent to create 10 new jobs and invest $700k with their new location in Prince William.
Results
Through 2Q 2010
Between January and June of 2010 11 companies- three expanding and eight companies new to Prince William County - announced intent to create 249 new jobs and invest $84.84 million. The Department of Economic Development estimates that 816 additional jobs were created in Prince William County since January, 2010 by non-DED projects. Notably, according to the latest available VEC data, Prince William County has seen a 7% growth in employment in the Professional, Technical and Scientific Services sector over the last year.
